Dragon Tiger Phoenix is evidently a way for Evolution to expand on the idea of Dragon Tiger. If you’re not familiar, Dragon Tiger is one of the simplest games available in live casino sites. Its goal is simply to predict which of two cards – Dragon or Tiger – will be higher after the dealer flips them over.

Although most casino players enjoy simplicity, Dragon Tiger has always been a niche game. To most players, it’s just a game of baccarat with simpler mechanics and worse odds. However, its fast pace and beginner-friendly rules have earned it a place among casino classics.

Evolution’s idea with Dragon Tiger Phoenix is quite straightforward  – what if the main bets of Dragon Tiger were a three-way decision rather than a binary choice?

The resulting game is quite interesting simply because it’s unlike anything else on the market. The three-way split means that there are several possible outcomes to every bet, which adds a new layer of complexity and excitement. Moreover, it offers an RTP rate of 96.66%, which is a solid step up from the 96.27% of regular Dragon Tiger.  However, Dragon Tiger Phoenix maintains the fundamental simplicity and pace of Dragon Tiger, so the target audience is largely the same.

How to Play Dragon Tiger Phoenix

The goal of Dtagon Tiger Phoenix is to predict which of three cards will be the highest.

There are three main bets available – Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix. Each bet corresponds to one card position on the table. Players can place bets during a designated betting period, which typically lasts around 12 seconds.

Once the betting period ends, the dealer places a single card on every position. The cards are then compared, and players receive a payout based on the outcome:

  • If your chosen card has the highest rank of all three cards, you win 1.8:1.
  • If your chosen card is lower than one or both of the other cards, your bet loses.
  • If your chosen card is equal to one other card and higher than the other, you win 1:1.
  • If all three cards are of the same rank, all Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix bets lose.

You can place up to two bets per round, excluding Tie bets.

The Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix bets are equal in all respects. They have the same payouts and the same probability of winning (just under 30%).

Tie Bet

The Tie bet wins 7:1 if any two cards are of the same rank, or 20:1 if all three cards are of the same rank.

You can place a Tie bet together with any other bet or combination of bets.

However, much like in Dragon Tiger and Baccarat, this wager has a substantially higher house edge than the Dragon/Tiger/Phoenix wagers, offering 94.51% RTP.

Strategy

Like most games of this type, Dragon Tiger Phoenix is entirely based on luck. There is no way to influence the outcome, so you can’t increase your odds of success in any way.

However, we’ve spent quite a bit of time with the game, and we have a lot of experience with similar games. Here are some of the observations and tips we’ve gathered while writing this review:

  • Never bet on the Tie. Tie bets have 94.51% RTP compared to the 96.66% RTP of Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix bets. This makes them objectively worse, especially if you play repeatedly. The house edge is not quite as steep as with Tie bets in Baccarat and Dragon Tiger, but it’s still a bad bet to make.
  • Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix bets are always equal. They have the same payouts, odds, and probabilities, regardless of the circumstances. Don’t use previous outcomes to try and predict which bet is “due” to win – that’s called the Gambler’s Fallacy.
  • Don’t make more than one bet per round. The option to make two main bets per round seems interesting at first because there’s a high chance that one of them will win, driving up your win rate to around 60%. However, this also means that you’ll essentially earn 0.8:1 per winning round (assuming both bets use equal stakes). The house edge remains the same, but this approach basically ensures you’ll never manage to outpace losses with profits.
  • Avoid betting systems. Betting systems like the Martingale typically work well with games like these, but most of them require even money bets to function properly. The three-way split of Dragon Tiger Phoenix makes this untenable.
  • Track your bets, wins, and losses carefully. Money management is important for any form of gambling, but this game makes it trickier than one would think. Because there are multiple possible outcomes for every bet, you’ll need to carefully record all payouts to keep a consistent ledger.

Pros and Cons of Dragon Tiger Phoenix by Evolution

Pros Cons

✅ Simple, engaging gameplay based on Dragon Tiger or Hi/Lo

✅ Adds new depth to an otherwise simple game through three-way betting and multiple possible outcomes

✅ 96.99% RTP for Dragon/Tiger/Phoenix bets, which is an improvement over Dragon Tiger

✅ Excellent graphics and smooth, fast gameplay

❌ The simple gameplay leaves little room for strategy or engagement

❌ Tie bets have lower RTP at 94.51% (which is admittedly better than Tie bets in other, similar games)

Payouts

Payouts in Dragon Tiger Phoenix are quite straightforward. The three main bets pay 1.8:1, or 1:1 if the winning card is equal to one other card. The Tie bet pays 7:1, or 20:1 if all three cards are equal.

We’ve condensed this information into a simple table below.

Bet Payout Alternate Payout
Dragon Tiger Phoenix Payouts
Dragon 1.8:1 1:1 (two-way Tie)
Tiger 1.8:1 1:1 (two-way Tie)
Phoenix 1.8:1 1:1 (two-way Tie)
Tie 7:1 (two-way Tie) 20:1 (three-way Tie)

Dragon Tiger Phoenix House Edge & RTP

The Dragon, Tiger, and Phoenix bets have 96.99% RTP, which translates to 3.01% house edge.

This is a fairly high house edge compared to most other live casino games, including roulette and baccarat. However, it’s a direct improvement over the standard 96.27% RTP of Dragon Tiger.

The Tie bet is significantly weaker at 94.51%, which translates to a house edge of 5.49%. This means that it’s a fairly poor long-term bet even though Ties are a lot more frequent than in Dragon Tiger.

That said, most Dragon Tiger tables have Tie bets with double-digit house edge rates, so it’s certainly a better option than what you would get there – or in Baccarat, for that matter.

Interface & Usability

The betting interface is largely the same as with most other games by Evolution, which means it’s quite intuitive and responsive. In fact, it largely looks the same as interfaces found in this provider’s baccarat/Dragon Tiger games, except that there’s a third betting position.

The game also offers two roadmaps, which largely work like baccarat scoreboards. They track previous results and present them in an easily-readable table that highlights streaks, Ties, and other trends. Compared to standard roadmaps, the markings use three colors to signify the three bets, but they’re otherwise the same.

THe UI also offers the usual array of result histories, rules, settings, and a live chat feature.  For some reason, it lacks an Autobet option.

Visuals & Live Dealer Experience

From a visual standpoint, Dragon Tiger Phoenix looks and plays like baccarat or Dragon Tiger.

Like many of those games, the studio is decorated in a vaguely Asian style, with motiffs of (you guessed it) Dragons, Tigers, and Phoenixes. In fact, it’s almost identical to the classic Evolution Dragon Tiger, which should make fans of the older game feel right at home.

All in all, it’s not a groundbreaking design, but the game certainly looks nice.

As expected from Evo, it also runs well with no lagging, hiccups, or technical issues.

The croupiers are generally direct and professional, and they focus on the game flow and announcements. In other words, it feels like a classic live casino table even though it’s running an innovative new game.

Languages

  • Dragon Tiger Phoenix is currently only available on one English-speaking table
  • However, you can change the language of the interface to one of multiple options. This includes English, Albanian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Our Verdict

Dragon Tiger Phoenix uses a simple idea to improve on the core concept of Dragon Tiger. While many of its features are indeed impvoements, it still inherits a lot of the issues of that game.

For starters, the three-way betting system is definitely unique and adds a new layer to a very straightforward game flow. It even improves the RTP, which is always good news for players.

However, the game’s maths still encourages a fairly boring way to play. The Tie bet still offers relatively poor RTP, and making more than one bet at a time is not a viable strategy for most users.

As such, the gameplay largely boils down to repeatedly making the same bet over and over again. As such, Dragon Tiger Phoenix will mostly appeal to existing fans of Dragon Tiger (or even baccarat). It’s a fun idea and a fresh experience, but it’s not for everyone.

How We Rate Live Casino Games

Here at Livecasinos.com, how we rate casino games is based on a strict set of standards that were developed over many years of playing and analyzing live dealer games of all sorts. Here are some of the key factors we consider before giving our recommendation:

  • Graphics & Stream Quality – A good, stable stream is essential for a positive gaming experience. Moreover, a game with a good-looking studio and UI is more enjoyable to play and can easily stand out from the competition
  • UI and User-Friendliness – A live casino’s user interface is used for every player action. As such, it’s very important for the UI to be easy to use, intuitive, and accessible for all players. Our reviews also consider any additional UI elements such as betting options, performance settings, stats and histories, and more.
  • Payouts & RTP – A game’s RTP essentially tells you how profitable the game is in the long run for the average player. A higher RTP is always better for us as players, making RTP one of the most objective ways to rate how good a particular game is.
  • Gameplay – This refers to how the game actually plays – whether it’s exciting, fun, engaging, and whether we’ve actually enjoyed playing it.
  • Extra Features – This refers to any added features such as additional bonuses, multipliers, and UI elements.
  • Platform compatibility – We also rate how well a game performs on mobile devices, apps, and various other platforms.
  • Localization and Native-speaking Tables – Games with a lot of language options are more accessible to international audiences, which is why we consider such features as well.
