Dragon Tiger is a simple, fast-paced, and moderately popular type of card game with East Asian origins. It boils down to comparing two card, and is about as straightforward as a betting game can be. The action keeps moving at all times, and you don’t have to worry about learning new rules or complex systems.

Of course, many players still want games with a bit more substance. In that regard, Dragon Tiger provides an excellent platform for additional side bets, features, and exciting innovations that aim to give it more depth and variance.

And if you’re looking for innovations in the live casino world, Evolution is undoubtedly the first brand that comes to mind. Their Lightning series of casino games caused a minor revolution in the world of online gaming by simply adding random multipliers onto familiar casino classics. The original (and arguably most successful) Lightning Roulette remains a fan-favourite to this day, but the Lightning template has also been applied to baccarat, blackjack, and even lotteries. It seems it’s time Dragon Tiger got the same treatment.

With all of the above in mind, the Lightning Dragon Tiger casino game is exactly what you would expect it to be. It takes the standard Evolution Dragon Tiger table and introduces the chance to substantially increase payouts through random multipliers. If you want to know more about how this works, check out the gameplay guide below.

For now, we’ll just note that the game looks and plays as well as any other Evo title, which is a good thing. The bespoke Dragon Tiger studio has been given a facelift with the traditional Lightning aesthetic, featuring bright reds and lightning bolts all over the place. It doesn’t really do the whole “game show” thing like Lightning Roulette, though. The atmosphere is pretty calm and in line with most other Dragon Tiger tables on the market.

How to Play Lightning Dragon Tiger Live

Dragon Tiger is one of the simplest games you will find in a live casino lobby, and this simplicity is still present in Lightning Dragon Tiger from Evolution.

The goal of the game is to predict which of two cards – Dragon or Tiger – will be higher. You start by placing a bet on one of the four positions at the bottom. Confirm your wager and wait for the betting period to end.

The dealer will then place two cards on the table. The one on the left is called the Dragon, while the one on the right is Tiger. The two cards are then compared, and the one with the higher value wins. If you place your bet on the winning side, you win.

Aces count as the lowest value in the game, making them the weakest cards. All other cards count as expected, going from 2 to King as lowest to highest.

However, if both cards end up having the same rank, the round is considered a Tie. If you placed a Dragon or Tiger bet during a tied round, half of your stake is returned to you.

You can also make a Tie bet, which wins only if both cards are of the same value. However, Tie bets generally have very low RTP and are best avoided.

Lastly, there is one additional betting option called Suited Tie. The Suited Tie bet only wins if both cards are of the same rank and suit. It’s the riskiest bet in the game but also offers the biggest possible payout.

Lightning Numbers

The whole point of Lightning Dragon Tiger are the Lightning Numbers, so it’s time we explained how they work in this game.

After the betting period ends in every round, one card suit is randomly selected – Clubs, Spades, Hearts, or Diamonds. A random multiplier between 2x and 8x is assigned to all cards of this suit. You can see the Lightning multiplier for the current round at all times in the lower left corner of the screen.

If your bet wins using a card with the selected suit, the standard 1:1 payout is replaced by the displayed multiplier.

For example, let’s say you bet on Dragon. The lightning round shows a 4x multiplier on all Hearts. The Dragon card turns out to be a King of Hearts and proceeds to win the round. Instead of the base 1x payout you would get with no multipliers, you win 4 times your initial stake.

If you bet on Tie or Suited Tie and both cards are Lightning cards, the payout is multiplied twice. For example, the 4x multiplier would end up being 16x.

However, a fixed fee of 20% applies to all bets in Lightning Dragon Tiger to cover the cost of the increased payouts. Note that this fee is not considered when calculating payouts.

    Lightning Dragon Tiger Strategy Tips

We highly recommend only ever betting on Dragon and Tiger. The RTP for these bets is high enough to make Lightning Dragon Tiger one of the best live Dragon Tiger games on the market.

Unfortunately, the Lightning features do not do much to improve the typically bad Tie bets. Suited Tie bets are even more egregious and should be avoided like the plague.

    Payouts & RTP

If you read our gameplay guide to Lightning Dragon Tiger, you should have a pretty solid idea about how payouts work in this game. If the cards you win with have no multipliers, the Dragon and Tiger bets pay to 1:1. If they do, you win the multiplier instead.

The Tie and Suited Tie bets pay 6,5:1 and 20:1, respectively. However, up to two multipliers can be applied to these bets, and they stack multiplicatively. This gives these wagers a much wider range of possible outcomes and higher volatility.

Just keep in mind that all bets, regardless of whether they win or lose, come with a 20% fee, which doesn’t count towards payouts. For example, let’s say you want to bet $1 on a Dragon or Tiger bet. After the 20%, the total amount you have to put down is $1.20. If the bet wins with no multipliers, you’ll receive a total of $2. This accounts for the initial stake and the 1:1 winnings, but not the fee.

Lightning Dragon Tiger RTP is 96.97% according to the information provided by Evolution. Interestingly, regular Dragon Tiger tables only offer 96.23%, which means the Lightning version is a direct improvement.

However, we have to note a few things about this figure. The RTP we just mentioned only applies to Dragon and Tiger bets. In classic Dragon Tiger games, Tie and Suited tie bets are much worse than that, often offering RTP well under 90%. Unfortunately, this is also true in this game. The Tie bet offers 91.26% RTP, while the Suited Tie is much worse with 82.93%.

    Our Verdict

Although Dragon Tiger doesn’t leave as much room for creativity as some other types of games, we would say this Lightning casino game is one of the best in the series. Why? Simple statistics, honestly.

Most games of this kind offer weaker RTP than their common counterparts. For example, for all the love and adoration shown to Lightning Roulette, the RTP for bets affected by Lightning Multipliers in that game is 97.10%. That’s slightly weaker than the European Roulette standard of 97.30%. However, most players consider this a fair trade-off due to the higher payout potential.

Lightning Dragon Tiger, on the other hand, is actually better in terms of RTP than the baseline Dragon Tiger card game. Not only is the game more exciting and graced by bigger payouts, but it’s actually better for your bottom line in the long run. If that doesn’t make you want to try it, we’ll also point out that it also looks and plays great. We already expected that from Evolution, though.

Our only real complaint is that Tie and Suited Tie bets are just bad. 82.93% RTP is simply a disaster, and no maximum payout is going to make up for that fact. That said, we can’t judge Lightning Dragon Tiger too harshly for this issue. After all, the problem is with the base rules of Dragon Tiger. We just think it’s a missed opportunity to make these risky bets a bit more viable.

All in all, another top-notch addition to the Lightning series, and another win for Evolution.
