VZN Blackjack: Our Review, How and Where to Play

!DISCLOSURE
Playtech by Playtech

VZN Blackjack is a multiplayer online blackjack game created by Playtech. VZN blackjack tables offer a hybrid experience that bridges the gap between live dealer blackjack and RNG-based online games. Although these games feature no actual cards or dealers, they allow multiple players to participate at the same time, which is an important part of the live casino experience. Moreover, the RNG nature of VZN blackjack ensures a low minimum bet of just $1 and a very strong RTP rate of 99.55%.

Although it’s not a true live casino game, VZN blackjack fills a particular niche that many live casino fans may find interesting. For starters, it’s a very budget-friendly way to play blackjack online with other people. Secondly, VZN tables can easily be altered and customised, resulting in a lot of variety. In this review, we’ll take a close look at Playtech VZN blackjack, what it offers, and the benefits of playing this hybrid form of online blackjack.

Firstly, we should answer a few questions about what VZN Blackjack actually is and how it works.

To be perfectly clear, VZN Blackjack is not an actual live dealer table. It does not stream any actual dealers and all of the outcomes are determined by computer-based RNG instead of actual cards. However, it does have certain live casino elements that many players will find interesting.

Most importantly, VZN tables are shared by actual players from all over the world. This works like it does in most live blackjack games. Players pick their spots at the 7-seat table and then play the game in real time. Everyone else at the table can see what you’re doing, which contributes to the community feeling that draws many players to live tables in the first place.

This kind of setup has some obvious drawbacks as well as a few advantages. The downside is that live blackjack fans enjoy the format because it offers an authentic casino experience: real cards, real props, real results. As such, VZN Blackjack may seem like a bit of a gimmick – an RNG blackjack game with a few multiplayer elements.

On the flip side, not having to maintain streams and professional dealers gave Playtech a bit of leeway in terms of rules, limits, and features. For starters, bets in VZN blackjack start at just $1, which is lower than the $5 minimum you’ll find on most 7-seat live tables. Secondly, VZN tables come in multiple varieties with a lot of optional side bets. Thirdly, the tables allow players to Double after a Split, which is not a common trait in live casino versions of the game. This further results in an RTP rate of 99.55%, which is high even by blackjack standards.

How to Play VZN Blackjack

Most of the rules and mechanics of this game will be very familiar to anyone who knows how to play blackjack. If you’re not, we recommend starting with our live blackjack tutorial to gain a basic understanding of the game.

In terms of usability, VZN blackjack works like a standard live table. You pick a table that suits your budget and take one or more seats. Although there are only 7 seats per table, there are quite a few tables available at any time, which is another advantage of the RNG setup.

The game is played using 8 decks of virtual cards. Unlike most RNG blackjack games, however, the decks are not “shuffled” between every round. Instead, the virtual shoes are exchanged after around 50% deck penetration.

You place bets by clicking on the main betting position in front of your seat. You can also play up to 4 side bets, though not all VZN tables feature all four side bets.

VZN Blackjack Rules

The table rules are fairly standard for modern online blackjack and are based on Vegas-style blackjack that will be familiar to most players. Here’s a brief rundown of the most important ones:

  • The dealer hits on a Soft 17, which is generally not considered favorable rule. Make sure to adapt your strategy chart to this rule.
  • The dealer immediately draws two cards and peeks for blackjack if they’re showing an Ace.
  • Blackjack pays 3:2.
  • Insurance is available and pays 2:1.
  • You can Split any Pair, including Aces. However, Split Aces can only receive one additional card.
  • No re-splitting is allowed.
  • No Surrender option available.
  • You can Double any hand, including both hands after a Split. This is a player-friendly rule that is very hard to find in live casino blackjack.
  • Up to four side bets are available on most tables: 21+3, Top3, Pairs and Dealer Pair. You need an active main bet to place a side bet. However, the wagers themselves can win or lose independently of the main result

All in all, it’s an interesting combination of rules. Doubling after a Split is especially interesting to point out since this option can be important for certain blackjack strategies.

Side Bets

VZN Blackjack is not really a single game but a collection of tables that feature slight variations. These differences are mostly reflected in varying table limits and the availability of side bets.

In any event, most tables have all four side bets available, and we’ll list all of them below. Just remember to carefully pick a table if you’re planning on playing the side wagers.

  • Pairs – This is essentially the common Perfect Pairs side bet available in many online blackjack variants. The bet wins if your initial two cards have the same rank. You can also get a higher payout if the two cards are of the same color or suit.
  • Dealer Pair – Does the same thing as Pairs, except that you’re predicting that the dealer’s first two cards will have the same rank. This means that this wager is not resolved until the end of the round. However, everything else is identical, including the bets’ payouts and RTP.
  • 21+3 – This side bet attempts to make a poker hand out of the first three visible cards (your two cards and the one dealer card). Depending on the poker hand in question, the payout can be from 5:1 to 100:1. Obviously, stronger poker hands result in higher payouts. Check out the paytable below for additional info.
  • Top 3 – Essentially the same as 21+3, but it only pays if you hit a Three of a Kind, Straight Flush, or Suited Three of a Kind. However, the payouts for these results are also substantially higher, going up to 270:1.

VZN Blackjack Strategy

Since the rules and gameplay of VZN Blackjack are nearly identical to standard blackjack, you should use basic blackjack strategy charts. These charts are essentially a detailed guide on what decision you should make in any given situation. They apply to most standard blackjack games, which means that experienced players won’t have any trouble with this game.

Just remember to use the correct chart for this exact ruleset. Some of the rules of VZN blackjack that may affect your basic blackjack strategy include:

  • Dealer draws to 16, must hit on a soft 17. The main effect is that players should Double Hard 11s instead of Standing. Since the game doesn’t allow you to surrender, the chart is otherwise largely the same
  • The game uses 8 decks with a fixed deck penetration of 50%
  • Neither Late nor Early Surrender are allowed
  • Doubling after a Split is available. This rule can help you leverage strong hands much more than most other blackjack tables because you can essentially quadruple your stake if you’re in a favorable position. While situations in which this is actually useful are quite rare, we’re still glad to see this rule for a change.

Beyond that, the best way to play VZN Blackjack is quite straightforward – pick the right chart and stick to it.

We should also mention that side bets in blackjack are generally a poor choice. If you’re adamant about playing them, keep in mind that Top 3 is strictly a worse version of 21+3 and should be avoided. Don’t be fooled by the big payouts because you’ll probably never win them.

RTP & House Edge

According to in-game information, the RTP of the main bet in VZN Blackjack is 99.55%. That’s a very strong rate even by blackjack standards, and it’s partially explained by the inclusion of player-friendly rules such as allowing Doubling after a Split.

As for the side bets, things don’t look nearly as bright. It’s not a surprise, really – side bets have a much higher house edge than the main bet in almost every blackjack game.

  • 21 + 3: 96.3% RTP
  • Player Pair: 95.9%
  • Dealer Pair: 95.9%
  • Top 3: 91% RTP

All in all, it’s a fairly good math model by live casino standards, reinforcing the advantages of the hybrid RNG setup.

Game Interface

Playtech tables generally come with all of the bells and whistles of a well-made live casino game. This means that players have access to various features such as a live chat, settings, bet history, and so on. Most of these screens can be found in the upper right corner. You can also find rules, payouts, stats, and various other bits of information in the in-game help screen.

Naturally, the live chat window can’t be used to communicate with dealers because there are none. However, you can talk to the other players at your table, which is what sets VZN blackjack apart from other RNG games.

Additionally, the Playtech VZN lobby allows you to play on multiple tables at once. You can access the option in the upper right corner of the game window, which lets you split the screen and enjoy up to 4 simultaneous games.

Graphics & Presentation

Even a quick glance at VZN blackjack reveals that it’s not an actual live dealer table. The table, cards, and background are all computer-generated models. Although the graphics look quite good, they’re still a bet sterile compared to an actual studio.

However, we quite enjoyed the little details that make the game feel more alive than most other RNG blackjack games. For example, the card shoe actually shortens as cards are removed from it. The cards also fly across the table similarly to how a good dealer would handle them, complete with little squeezes and flourishes. We’re not saying it’s a groundbreaking level of realism, but these small touches add a bit to the experience.

Beyond that, we’ll also note that the lack of an actual stream means that the game runs well even on poor connections or older devices. Overall, it’s a very accessible game that can be enjoyed regardless of your budget, connection, or platform.

Our Verdict

The biggest real issue with VZN blackjack is that it’s not an actual live dealer table. Fans of live gaming often specifically enjoy the authenticity of real dealers, real cards, and real studio locations. VZN blackjack offers none of that, but borrows a few parts of the live casino experience such as sharing tables among multiple players.

Although we don’t typically review RNG blackjack games here on LiveCasinos.com, this piqued our interest. We have to say that the hybrid model offers a few clear advantages: the minimum bet is low at just $1, there are always available seats, and even the rules are a bit friendlier than usual.

As far as RNG blackjack games go, VZN blackjack even looks better than most of the competition. Playtech really went out of their way to make the simulated table look as real as possible, but make no mistake: a lot of the authenticity of playing live is just not there.

All in all, this is probably one of the best RNG blackjack games we’ve ever played, but we still prefer true live dealer tables.

How We Rate Live Blackjack Games

Our game reviews and ratings are based on a strict set of standards that were developed over many years of playing and analyzing live dealer games of all sorts. Here are some of the key factors we consider before giving our recommendation for a blackjack game:

  • Graphics & Stream Quality – Although visuals are not the most important factor, they certainly matter. Good-looking games create a better and more immersive atmosphere. Moreover, the game’s graphics can set it apart from the competition.
  • UI and User-Friendliness – Well-designed games have intuitive interfaces that are easy to use and access. Our reviews also consider any additional UI elements such as betting options, performance settings, stats and histories, and more.
  • Payouts & RTP – How much your bets win is crucial for determining a casino game’s quality. In the case of blackjack, we compare payouts and RTP to industry standards. For instance, games in which blackjack pays 3:2 are objectively superior to those where it pays 6:5.
  • Gameplay Features – This refers to any added elements and extra features that you won’t find in standard variants of the game.
  • Table Rules – Blackjack tables can vary in terms of table rules. More player-friendly rules result in a higher RTP, which is why they’re so important.
  • Platform compatibility – We also rate how well a game performs on mobile devices, apps, etc.
  • Localization and Native-speaking Tables – Games with a lot of language options are more accessible to international audiences, which is why we consider such features as well.
