The short answer is “everything.”
In this article, I write from personal experience as a lifelong high-stakes casino gambler. However, the same dynamics apply to online live dealer games, which are designed to give high-rolling bettors as close to the same experience as possible when they’re at land-based gaming tables. Although the live dealer environment cannot completely replicate the brick and mortar dynamic, you’d be surprised how little that matters in the minds of those used to high-stakes casino play at VIP tables. It’s the gambling state of mind that counts the most. It’s what really creates the high-level energetic atmosphere whether that player is in a big-city casino or in front of a big-screen TV.
These high rollers have a tunnel vision that easily crosses over from one gambling mecca to the other. Their own mindsets bridge the gaps between the two.
How Bet Size Changes Everything at the Table
First and foremost, it gives everyone involved an adrenalin rush, not only the players, but, believe it or not, the dealers and pit bosses as well. I can relate to this from two perspectives. The first, of course, is my experience sitting at the tables behind my own large bets, sometimes ultra-large bets. The biggest single bet I ever made at a land-based casino is $15,000. In fact, I bet that exact amount twice, each time with a different mindset but both times in a state of emotional upheaval. And both times at my favorite high-stakes table game: baccarat.
The first time I made that bet was while I was in the midst of a bad losing streak. I had lost seven hands in a row, the first two at $500 and $1,000, then the last five at between $1,000 and $2,000. At that point in the session, I was down close to ten “big ones.” Before I’d gone on that losing streak, I’d been doing quite well and was even tipping the dealer. But when it all turned bad, I finally felt an urge to end the session by either going broke or coming out a winner, in one fell swoop. So, I pushed my remaining $15,000 in chips into the betting square on the “Bank.”
I won that bet, got up and hurried directly to the cashier, cashed out my chips and went home a $5,000 winner.
The second time I made a $15,000 bet was under completely different circumstances. I was in the middle of a hot streak, having bought in for $5,000 and run up more than $35,000 in profit. I’d been feeling indestructible. I decided to take a big shot at winning $50,000 for the session but assured myself of going home at least $15,000 ahead.
Almost poetically, and perfectly inverted to the first scenario, I lost that monster bet while winning whereas I’d won that monster bet while losing.
Risk Exposure and Why Every Hand Carries More Weight
Once a player lays down a bet of $10,000 or more on a casino table layout, things shift gears immediately. When other players at the table follow with that kind of bet-size, everything shifts right into fifth gear. The casino risk exposure on every hand increases dramatically, and the atmosphere at these high-stakes tables is markedly different than the rest of the tables on the casino floor.
From the casino perspective, the risk exposure per hand when you have a group of super high rollers is exponential compared to normal tables. Some bosses don’t sweat the action because they know the built-in house percentages have to pan out in the long-term. But others give the impression that their jobs are at stake when the casino gets hit with large losses on their watch. They become nervous, and at times you can actually see them sweating. Each hand takes on more weight as the cumulative factor of all that high-stakes betting grates on everyone involved.
